Tuckernuck's Colonel Cody Bear "Cody" and Tuckernuck's Captain Messier "Messy" 4/26/10

A Tribute to Tuckernuck's Colonel Cody Bear "Cody" and Tuckernuck's Captain Messier "Messy"

Tuckernuck's Colonel Cody Bear "Cody" and Tuckernuck's Captain Messier "Messy"

Pictured here are two of our beloved labs - lying is Tuckernuck's Colonel Cody Bear "Cody" and sitting his half brother Tuckernuck's Captain Messier "Messy" just after a mid-summer backyard bath. Cody lived sixteen and Messy eleven years!

They were WONDERFULL DOGS and we can't wait until we can get another.

Cody got his name from a trip Abby & I took to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone before Kate was born. Messy (somehow sooo appropriate) was named for the great Captain of the New York Rangers hockey team that won the championship within a few weeks before his birth.

While we have a million stories, I'll relate just one here. Cody was about ten years old, sleeping soundly (snoring probably) in the sun on the living room floor with one of his ears flat on the floor. I was reading on the couch and Katherine was "dolled up" playing ballet, complete with Tutu, leotard, patent black dance shoes, tiara and a star topped wand - just dancing away happy as a lark.

THEN IT HAPPENDED! HORRORS! Kate accidently STOMPED her twenty-five pounds on Cody's ear! In slow motion I saw her stomp, hear him yelp, Kate jumped back, I jumped up, Cody sprang to his feet... ... ... and instead of snapping at her or even growing he simply looked at her, looked at me and walked to another sunny spot and went back to sleep!

I don't know why, but this always exemplified a labrador to me - strong, beautiful, proud, loyal, loving, protective and gentle like only a lab's family member understands. Don't tell anyone else! They'll ruin the breed.

GOODBYE by John Quealy

With heavy hearts; and a tear in our eyes
after all these years; we must say goodbye
Please understand; we've done all we could
if there was anything we could do; you know we would

I'm sitting right here; gently rub your ears
while I talk to you softly; trying to hold back the tears
The memories you gave us; we'll never forget
especially the ones; of the day we all met

One last hug; and one last kiss
you have no idea; how much you'll be missed
To look into your eyes; this one last time
you tell me it's ok; you know it's your time

Close your eyes now; and go to sleep
we'll pray to the Lord; you're soul he'll keep
Go in peace now; our good friend
we'll stay right here with you; until the end

Dream of that special day and time
when we'll meet at the Bridge; and all will be fine
We'll run and play; side by side
with a soft warm feeling; deep down inside

Your memory will live on; in each one of us
you'll always be number 1; to all of us
Have a safe journey; through the night
I promise when you awake; you'll be in God's light

So with heavy hearts; and tears in our eyes
just for now my friend; we say goodbye.

My deepest sympathy on your loss of Tuckernuck's Colonel Cody Bear "Cody" and Tuckernuck's Captain Messier "Messy". Thank you for the wonderful story. They are truly an outstanding and lovable breed! I appreciate you sharing them with me and all the readers of Labrador Retriever Pictures.
